Ugh! I’ve got to concentrate! Normally, when Amy put on her headphones to transcribe, she had no problem blocking out the world. But then, that’s why she used to go into an office to work, and when she worked from home only did when Rosie was in preschool. I can’t blame this on Rosie.

Her daughter had woken up so excited to find out that they were going to stay at Liam’s house. After he left to go to the station, Rosie had been playing quietly for most of the morning. Now, she was having her break, playing a game on Amy’s iPad nearby so that Amy could keep an eye on her.

No, this is all on me. Her mind was filled with the vision of Liam standing so close at the top of the stairs last night, then leaning forward and kissing her forehead. She blamed her tumultuous hormones on the fact that she had to fight the desire to jump him. God, what a disaster that would’ve been. We’re friends, that’s all. Plus, I’m as big as a whale, carrying another man’s baby. Yep, I’m sure he’s tempted! Her last thought was followed by an eye roll, then she shook her head, breathed deeply for a moment to clear her mind, and turned back to the next file needing to be transcribed.

She’d made it through Dr. Malcolm’s surgery notes and was now entering dictated recommendations and prescriptions for physical therapy as well as medical devices. As much as he refers clients to Medical Supply of the Shore, I’m not surprised he dictates these orders.

After another fifteen minutes of transcribing orders, she was surprised to open a file that appeared to be a phone message as opposed to medical orders. Checking to confirm that it came from Dr. Malcolm and had been sent to her for transcription, she continued typing.

Much of medical transcription didn’t make sense to the typical transcriber, but her skill was not only typing quickly but in knowing the terminology used. But the more she typed, the more confused she became. Looking down, she reread the notes. Client names with birthdates. Medical diagnosis next to each one. Then, a prescription for various splints to be filled by the medical supply store here on the shore. What confused her was his voice saying, “—then, make sure you duplicate patient names. Change birth date and prescription. Charge both. File under Medicare, as usual. Same for Johnson and Trabelle.”

Her fingers hovered over the laptop keys, a snake of unease slithering through her. She couldn’t understand why he needed to have the store duplicate a name but change the birthdates. If he wanted the same patient to have more than one prescription for supplies, then their birthdate would stay the same. She replayed the dictated message. The very first part was cut off but the rest of the message was as clear as she’d heard the first time.

Johnson was a common last name, but Trabelle wasn’t. Since both were the names
